History


Paraffin wax was first discovered or engineered in 1830 by a scientist after it was learned how to separate the waxy substance from actual petroleum to be used to produce commercial items. Paraffin was a major advancement in the candle making the industry as it burned more cleanly and reliably and was cheaper to manufacture than any other candle fuel. The French and British were among the first to use paraffin wax medically during World War I. It was used to treat orthopaedic problems and its continuous use arose in popularity as it helped treat ailments.

How does it work?

Paraffin wax has a very high heat capacity in which it is able to absorb and retain a great amount of heat. In a simple process called heat transfer, the heat is transferred to the core of the affected area as paraffin goes through a phase change. As the wax melts in a heated bath, the paraffin becomes a liquid and it able to retain more heat. Then a hand, foot or other area is dipped into the heated bath, the paraffin surrounds the area and quickly turns into a solid, the heat is given off it called heat fusion.

Once the area is removed from the wax, the air causes the wax to harden. We place the foot and ankle three times into the wax bath and then the foot is placed inside a plastic bag before wearing a cotton booty to further insulate the heat. The hardened wax is then peeled away.

Paraffin wax therapy, however, is not recommended for people with diabetes, open wounds, allergies, hypertension and peripheral vascular disease.

Ending the School Year on a High

school year

Being once a high school student, one of the schooling events that was pretty much looked forward to by students was the school formal. At my high school, the year 12s had an end of year formal the night after graduation. Our graduation and formal was held after all our exams were completed. It was a time for celebration after a long, hard 13 years of schooling. After countless of all-nighters, cramming in last minute assignments and studying for tests and exams, our formal was a way to celebrate and let our hair loose school year.

I remember months leading up to the year 12 formal, it was the topic on everyone’s tongues. All the girls would talk about the perfect dress, hair, makeup and accessories… and of course their perfect date. Just like in teenage movies, when the boy would ask the girl to be his formal date, that’s what we would fantasise about. Waiting for our crush to ask us to the formal or plucking up the courage to ask the guy ourselves. Every recess and lunch break, the topic of our formal would somehow come up. A couple of months before the formal my friends and I decided to go formal dress shopping. None of us had our dresses then and we didn’t really know what kind of dress we wanted. There was just so many options to choose from school year. Most of my friends and I decided to go for floor length dresses as opposed to short dresses. We wanted to end our last year of high school with a bang and look as good as we possibly could.
