The refreshing drink based on ice and fruit juice can be prepared at home in a natural way. Hot days of the summer keep hitting hard, specially when we have a very active summer. But what better than to taste under the rays of the sun than a refreshing and delicious slushies.

And the illusion back in the days was to ask for it with a lot of condensed milk so that it would be very sweet. But times have changed. With the increasingly urban lifestyle – and little exercise – sugar can no longer be abused. Today’s slushies can be made in a healthy way at home, with natural fruit juice that replaces the artificial syrups and natural honey that replaces condensed milk.

Inspired by traditional Latin flavours, and using only natural ingredients, slushies can be the perfect addition to any hot day, helping children go through their day more easily.  People dedicated to the business of making slushies usually say that many people ask them for the recipes and they always mention that the secret is to use the best natural ingredients and add some honey or condensed milk to enhance the flavour.

The versatility of the honey allows it to be combined practically with any fruit and its unparalleled flavour makes it stand out from other sweeteners.

Fruit juices are the key

The juices of these fruits – or others – are poured over frappe or crushed ice. If you do not have a frappe ice machine, it is obtained by liquefying ice cubes in a blender with ice crushers or by placing them in a plastic bag and crushing them with a rolling pin or any other heavy kitchen utensil. Using a great slushy machine is also a good option.

Frappe ice is also obtained directly from refrigerators or refrigerators that come with a crushed ice dispenser. To give a touch of elegance to the slushy with natural flavours, you can use pieces of fruit that were used to make the juice or syrup. It can also be decorated with a spice of cinnamon or mint leaves or basil.

There is a wide range of tropical fruits, which has pineapple, two types of papaya and passion fruit that you can include in a good slushy.

Slushies are made with crushed ice, fruit-flavoured syrup (or natural juice from your favourite fruit). You can also add condensed milk, syrup, caramel or any other sweetener such as honey. Remember that the best option for your slushy is always a great tropical fruit!

For this recipe you don’t need a slushy machine, you can do it using your blender and a couple of moulds to make ice cubes. However, if you have an import event coming up then renting a slushy machine that allows you to complete slushies in a shorter time is te best option.

Remember that slushies made of tropical fruits are a healthy and delicious idea, it is perfect as a snack after school, as a fresh snack when we watch movies, or even as a dessert. It is an ideal way to add fruits to the daily menu in an easy, fun and exquisite way.

Making slushies from tropical fruits

4-5 servings

Preparation time: 3 minutes

From start to finish: 10 minutes + 6 hours in the fridge

Ingredients:

  • 1 (15.25 oz) can of tropical fruits
  • 2 cups pineapple juice
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • Mint or mint leaves to decorate, these are completely optional.
  1. Place the contents of the tropical fruit can in a blender, add the pineapple juice, the lemon juice and the honey and blend until all the ingredients are completely mixed.
  2. Empty the mixture in ice cube moulds.
  3. Freeze for 6 hours or until the ice cubes are completely firm. If you leave them overnight, even better.
  4. A few minutes before serving, place the tropical fruit ice cubes in a food processor. Press 3-4 times until they break and achieve the consistency according to your taste. Serve immediately.

Now, if you want to prepare the granita for the same day you can do the following:

Freeze the ice cubes for 2 and a half hours. Remove them from the freezer and insert a fork several times in each bucket until the ice breaks. Return to the freezer for another 45 minutes. Break the ice with the fork again and serve immediately.

Quick tips that can make your slushy look better

  • Place one or two ice cubes with tropical fruits in the children’s glass of water, it will give them a fresh flavour and it will cool at the same time.
  • Put wooden sticks in the cubes when they are freezing, and you will have pallets!
  • Use other cans of canned fruits such as mango, pineapple or tangerines to create different flavours.
