These are the 7 most common mistakes that usually happen when building roofs with tiles, because the lack of proper supervision or cost cutting these jobs can become a nightmare at home. The roof is a very important part of the house, taking into account it covers ourselves from external menaces, for that reason it is important to keep the roof well-maintained and according to the standards of safety.
In a broad and simplistic sense, it can be said that a house has four walls and a roof: the walls are the side walls, while the roof is the structure that is placed above, horizontally. Thus, those who are inside the house, are sheltered from the sun and the rain. The roof design can be very varied, as can its materials. The most precarious houses have thatched roof, sheet metal or cardboard, something that makes them unstable since the roof can be damaged easily.

Prevent leaks where tiles meet other surfaces, such as walls and chimneys. This work usually takes time, so if the roofers are careless and pour the cement in the wrong way, it seals fast but, in the process, it cracks and small spaces are created where the rainwater can be filtered. In the end, all it does is make an adequate repair more difficult. So, verify that the roof has no cracks.
No chimney mouths
A wide chimney mouth can form a dam on the roof. Debris accumulates behind that dam and maintains moisture, which leads to rusty flickering and wood rot. Any 30-inch-wide fireplace needs a “cricket,” or “saddle,” basically a small roof built behind the fireplace. A properly installed chimney cricket will direct water and debris around the chimney and roof. If your chimney does not have one, you must install one as long as the roof does not affect the rainy season.
Disappearance of directors for gutters
Gutter managers are critical when a roof edge meets a sidewall. Without it, the runoff from the roof flows through the wall. This is worse when there is a door or a window below and the water can leak behind the fitting. You may not notice it for years, but eventually the rot will destroy the siding and framing. In extreme cases, stucco is the only thing that holds the wall. Do not wait for that to happen to you.
Bad Chimney Flashing
A good fireplace base includes “step” sections that run up the sides of the fireplace. The counter base fits into slots cut into the chimney and covers the flashing passage. Cutting, mounting and installing all those parts takes time, so careless roofers take shortcuts.
Chimneys with improper bases cause a lot of rotting roof lining and framing elements. Chimneys need to be installed properly with a good base and counter base so that water cannot seep down the face of the chimney and into the attic.
Coverage or apron for side gutters
When water flows out from the edge of the roof, part of it clings to the bottom of the tiles and dribbles towards the fascia. If you have gutters but no sewer apron to stop the water, eventually, the fascia, and even the roof lining will rot. You will see spots of water below the gutter in the fascia. This is a sure sign that the spout apron is missing.
Your plumbing system includes “ventilation” tubes that pass through the roof. And like any other roof penetration, that sometimes means problems. There are two types of bases used to seal the vents: a “boot” that is based on a comfortable rubber seal, and all the base metal with soft lead that can be folded over and into the pipe. Some versions are made entirely of lead; Others are made of galvanised steel with a lead collar. When any type of ventilation flicker fails, the solution is to replace it.
Damage done by hail
When a hail stone hits an asphalt shingle, it can tear or even puncture the tile. But usually, it only hits the granules on the surface. When a tile loses its protective layer of granules, the UV rays of the sun begin to destroy it. More granules fall around the damaged spot and the bruise grows. The damage may not be obvious at first, so if you suspect hail damage, get an inspection from a roofing contractor. Most offer free inspections of hail damage.
Our house is probably our favourite corner of the world so we must always keep it in good condition to take advantage of it every day and live comfortable and carefree. If there are plenty of problems in your roof then you may want to consider a complete renewal so you can also make a change in its appearance. The structure of a roof may be more than you imagined, but do not believe it is what largely supports the passage of water, wind and endless elements that support each day. As a primary element of the house, it must be in perfect condition.
For example, a sheet metal roof offers a variety of colours and presentations. They are double sheets with insulation in polyurethane that provides thermal, acoustic and water-repellent insulation; also, they vary in the systems of subjection to avoid the leaks, through anchorages underneath, without need to perforate the sheets. These solutions favour in relation to speed of execution, weight on the structure and costs.
