It is impossible to affirm with certainty the date in which the first underwear garments were created. But as we have already pointed out, in ancient Egypt a kind of linen diaper was already used to protect intimate areas. Also, long ago the Romans used a kind of wool or linen pants (depending on the season), which for reasons of hygiene was put under the tunics to protect themselves. And even the gladiators wore the Subligaculum the garment with which they covered their genitals when they fought in the ring.
Centuries later (specifically in the sixteenth century), what became “fashionable” was to wear genital support, a garment that kept the virile member upright and whose presence can be seen in some of the most outstanding portraits of the time.
Little by little the concept of underwear was evolving, and another of the great milestones in the history of this type of garments was found in 1934, at which time it began to become popular that men were bare-chested. Until then, men also had to have the top part covered and, in fact, the images of the 1920s in which the male swimsuit also covered the upper part of the body are mythical.
During the last century the evolution of men’s underwear has been rather discreet and although the wide cotton shorts have given way to other forms such as the slip or the boxer, the truth is that no extreme novelties are appreciated. In spite of everything, the men’s underwear sector is currently undergoing a real revolution.
